The Columbus tree in Santo Domingo

Near the banks of the Ozama River in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, you can find a facade of what some claim is the actual tree trunk to which Christopher Columbus moored one of his caravels when he first landed in the island of Hispaniola.

It is famously known as "La Cieba de Colon" (The Columbus Tree).

Considering that the Columbus tree was large enough in 1492 to anchor a ship the size of the Santa maria, it must have been a very old tree when Columbus first landed on Hispaniola.

Though many efforts were made to preserve the historical symbol, the Columbus Tree was unfortunately cut during the 1920s.
