Pollution and Harmful Bacteria in the Ozama River

Slaughterhouse waste, industrial waste, bacterias that can cause meningitis, tonsillitis, streptococci; Also salmonella; schigella, which causes diarrhea; klebsiella, which causes infection of the airways -- This is just a short list of the pollutuion and harmful bacteria found in the Ozama River.



The findings are according to a study developed by environmental consultant William Gutierrez, who also noted that the Ozama River exceeds ten times the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), which is usually found in a river with clean water.

Gutiérrez further adds that, about 90 thousand tons of waste per year are dumped in the urban basin of the Ozama.
