The Central Bank of the Dominican Republic was established on October 9, 1947, in accordance with the Monetary Law No.1528, and commenced operations on October 23 of that year, instituting a decentralized and autonomous entity. It is the only body authorized to issue banknotes and coins in the Dominican territory.

The first national banknotes issued were designations of RD$1, RD$5, and RD$10, the note were designed similarly to the US dollar in relation to its size and features, by the American Bank Note Company, in 1947.

The engraving of Juan Pablo Duarte, one of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic, was used in the RD$1 banknote, which was in circulation between 1947 and 1955.
