Luis Desangles (1861–1940), Artist from Santo Domingo



Luis Desangles Sibilly (1861-1940), considered by many art critics and historians as one of the most important figures related to the flourishing and definitions of modern art in the Dominican Republic.

The son of French parents, born Santo Domingo, Desangles expressed an interest in art from an early age. His first instructions in art were under León Cordero (1809-1874).

Desangles also traveled to Italy to continue artistic studies, developing in the fields of drawing, sculpture and painting. In 1883 he opens his own workshop in Santo Domingo where he instructs many great artist that would go on to set the course for the Dominican Republic's contemporary art movement.
