Antonio Guadalupe (Moca, b. 1941)

Antonio Guadalupe, born 1941, in Moca, capital of the Espaillat province, in the Cibao region of the Dominican Republic.

At a young age, Guadalupe began his artistic training in his hometown, under the tutelage of a little known artist, Poncio Salcedo. His growing interest for the arts had him travel several times to the neighboring city of Santiago de los Caballeros, where he had the opportunity to fall under the guidence of Yoryi Morel. When he was 18 years old, Guadalupe decided to travel to the capital and enroll at the National School of Fine Arts. But not long after enrolling, he decides to travel to New York City where he comes under the tutelage of an Italian painter, Prillo Grinilli.

Upon his return to Moca in the mid 1960s, Guadalupe decides to open a workshop which he names 'Vicent Van Gogh' after the Dutch Post-Impressionist painter.

His desire to teach art leads him to pursue the opening of an art academy in Moca. With the help of Dominican author, Aida Cartagena, and Professor Máximo Avilés Blonda, director of the National School of Fine Arts in Santo Domingo at that time, he was able to achieve his dream.
