Gilberto Hernández Ortega (1924-1978)
Gilberto Hernández Ortega (1924-1978) was born in Bani, capital town of the Peravia Province, in the southern region of the Dominican Republic.
He graduated from the National School of Fine Arts in 1945, where he received painting lessons from Celeste Woss and Gil and José Gausachs. He accepted a position as a professor at the school in 1946, and was named vice director in 1954.
Between 1945 and 1950, Ortega exhibited his work at a national level. In 1951, he travels to Venezuela and exhibits at the Venezuelan American Center of Caracas. Other countries include Argentina, Brazil, Israel, United States, Taiwan and Spain.
Among the distinctions, Hernández Ortega has won awards at the National Biennials of the years 1952, 1958 and 1974.
